How voting has changed in Fayette County

As Fayette County voters prepare for the May 19 primary election, the process of casting a ballot may feel routine. But the way Americans vote—and who is allowed to vote—has changed dramatically over the years. Fayette County was established in 1824, when Alabama was still a young state. In those early years, elections were much simpler than today. Voting often took place at the courthouse or other community gathering places, and ballots were counted by hand. Participation was limited, however. In the early 1800s, the right to vote was generally restricted to white men, and voter turnout was far smaller than what is seen in modern elections.
