Back to School Sales Tax Holiday starts this Friday

Alabama residents can take advantage of the Back to-School Sales Tax Holiday starting 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 18 through midnight Sunday, July 20.

During this time, purchases of certain school-related items will be exempt from state sales tax, though local taxes may still apply.

Eligible items include:

• Clothing priced at $100 or less per item

• Computers, software, and school computer supplies priced up to $750 per purchase (complete packages only) • Books with a sales price of $30 or less

• School supplies, art supplies, and instructional materials priced at $50 or less per item

Computers must include a CPU and devices such as a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers sold together. Parts and accessories sold separately do not qualify.

The Fayette Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Back to School Bash Friday, July 18 at the Fayette Courthouse from 5:30 - 8 p.m. Downtown businesses will have extended hours and sales for shoppers to take advantage of the holiday and start preparing for the upcoming school year. Food, shaved ice and lemonade will be available. There will also be live music by local artists Daniel Hindman and Scott Robertson.
