SAMMY RENFROE

Funeral services for Mr. Sam J. “Sammy” Renfroe, III, age 74 of Fayette, were held on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Nelson Funeral Home with the Rev. J Barrett Lloyd officiating. Burial followed at Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church outside of Fayette along a peaceful ridge of serene woodland. He died Wednesday, April 16, at Fayette Medical Center after a courageous and lengthy battle.
Sammy was born and raised in Fayette. He was an avid athlete at Fayette County High School and later attended Auburn University where he played football and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction in 1972. While his younger years were filled with outdoor hunting adventures, his later years became more focused on feeding his beloved birds and other wildlife from his deck. He was revered as a grill master and phenomenal cook and relished in opportunities to serve his community and church. Otherwise known as “The Boss,” he enjoyed every minute of fellowship while playing rhythm guitar with C Plus for the past 25 years. An avid morning coffee drinker and golfer, he built a host of relationships that he treasured across the community. He loved his Auburn Tigers and enjoyed a pastime of keeping abreast of athletic recruitment (War Eagle!). He adored his Fayette First Methodist Church family and maintained a keen focus on his walk with the Lord and service to others. His love and pride of his family as a husband, father, GrandSam, and brother were unwavering, as well as his heart for others who deserve second chances.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam J. “Bo” Renfroe, Jr. and Mary Spain Wiggins Renfroe.
Sammy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Agerton Renfroe of Fayette; two daughters, April (Brent) Tolbert of Calera and Christy (Keith) Birmingham of Bessemer; three brothers, Bob (Karon) Renfroe of Fayette, Ray (Karol) Renfroe of Auburn, and Ben (Lee) Renfroe of Muscle Shoals; and two grandsons, Brooks (Madison) Tolbert of Tuscaloosa and Ross Tolbert of Calera.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the C Plus band, his fellow morning cafe coffee drinkers, his Fayette County Club golf buddies, Dr. Martha Jo Christian and the Fayette Medical Center staff, Alabama Hospice of Jasper, and members of the Fayette First Methodist Men.
Active pallbearers are Brent Tolbert, Keith Birmingham, Brooks Tolbert, Ross Tolbert, Russell Renfroe, and Roger Wallace.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Fayette First Methodist Church Perpetual Endowment Fund, 412 Temple Avenue North, Fayette, AL 35555.
