On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a tip regarding an illegal whiskey still operation.

After more than four decades of public service, Fayette County Revenue Commissioner Ruby Porter has retired.

The Hubbertville Lions and the Berry Wildcats were both looking to remain undefeated in the young season as they met at Fred Webster Stadium. Hubbertville took advantage of some early miscues by the Wildcats to take an early lead and went on to win by a score of 44 - 12.

The propane leak at the intersection of County Road 30 West and Highway 18 East in Berry has now been resolved. Residents are now able to return to their homes.
There will be a residual smell overnight. This smell is an additive that is added to the gas, so leaks can be detected. Thank you for your patience during this time.
District Attorney asks Attorney General to superintend prosecution
Timothy Vess Benton, a convicted sex offender, was arrested Thursday, Sept. 4, for a Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) violation. According to court records, he was released the same day on bond.

Investigation into Spinato homicide still underway
Kenneth “Kenny” Spinato was found dead in his home during the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022. Investigators quickly determined Spinato had been a victim of homicide.
Three years later, no arrests have been made and the case remains open. Despite years of investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, the circumstances surrounding Spinato’s death remain a mystery.
Concerned citizens gathered peacefully on Friday on the Fayette Courthouse lawn to protest the recent transfer of convicted sex offender Timothy Vess Benton from state prison to the Fayette Community Corrections Program (CCP). Residents in the rally demanded transparency and accountability regarding the decision.
Benton was originally arrested and indicted on a 48-count felony Grand Jury indictment in 2017. In 2019, he pled guilty to two counts of sodomy in the second degree and was sentenced to 17 years in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections.
On Wednesday, Aug. 27, Fayette police and fire responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of 2nd Ave. N.E. and 10th Street N.W.
According to the crash report, the driver of a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse was attempting to turn onto 10th St. N.E. She told officers that no vehicles were waiting at the red light to turn in the opposite direction and that she did not see any cars approaching in the outside lane before initiating the turn.
What began as an eighth grade English project in 1976 has grown into a nearly 50-year friendship that spans continents and cultures.
Jackie Moore, a Fayette County native, was in middle school when her teacher assigned each student with a pen pal. At first, she was paired with a boy. Moore said that after exchanging a few letters, she asked a friend to help her connect with a girl instead. That’s when she was introduced to Yasuyo Kusakabe, a student living in Japan.

The Wildcats kicked off their 2025 campaign by traveling to Carrollton to face the Pickens Academy Pirates. The Berry defense staked the Wildcats to an early lead and senior running back Lake Norris scored five touchdowns as Berry cruised to a 51-28 victory. This marked the third year in a row that the Wildcats started with a win and it was Coach Danny Raines’s 150th career victory as a head coach.
