The Fayette County Commission held its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Fayette County Courthouse Annex building. The meeting opened with a prayer led by Commission Chairman Mike Freeman, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Local law enforcement and other members of the community gathered in Fayette for the Crisis Response and Intervention Training held Sept. 15–19. Hosted by the Fayette Police Department and presented by the Tuscaloosa Police Behavioral Intervention Team and the Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center, the 40-hour course equipped participants with skills in mental illness recognition, de-escalation strategies and communication techniques.
A preliminary hearing for Timothy Vess Benton has been scheduled for Oct. 16 at 2 p.m., according to recent court filings. Records show that the hearing will be held in District Judge James E. Gentry’s courtroom (courtroom No. 2) on the sixth floor of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse. The order was submitted by Gentry and electronically filed on Friday, Sept. 19.

The Berry Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire on Jim Taylor Road on Sunday, Sept. 21. Upon arrival the fire was found to be extinguished with some damage to the property, but had spread to the surrounding woods.

The 55th annual Fayette Arts Festival drew in large crowds to the Fayette Civic Center and Art Museum on Saturday, Sept. 13. Visitors from all over browsed a variety of handmade crafts and artwork, ranging from pottery and paintings to jewelry and lures. Food trucks and local vendors were also onsite serving up comfort foods and sweet treats throughout the day.
Mayor Pro Temp Eddy Campbell, pictured at right, was presented a Frog Level promotional poster by Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Emily Montague, for his dedicated support of the annual event.
The Fayette City Council held a public hearing prior to its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at city hall. The hearing began with Matt Leavell with Leavell Design Consulting LLC., reviewing the city’s comprehensive plan, which has been in development for over nine months and is available on the city’s website for public review.

The Berry Wildcats were looking to get back on the winning track as they hosted the South Lamar Stallions. Berry got off to a fast start but South Lamar kept the game close in the first half. The Wildcats would score touchdowns on offense, defense, and special teams in their 54 - 33 victory over the Stallions.
Fayette County High School will celebrate its 2025 homecoming during the week of Sept. 29 through Oct. 3, with the theme “GAME ON, Blue Devils!” The homecoming festivities kick off Friday, Sept. 26, with “A Night in the Bayou,” a dance for students in grades 9–12. The event will be held at Bungalows from 8 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by Thursday, Sept. 25.
Throughout the week, students can participate in themed dress-up days:
• Monday: “Monopoly Monday” — Dress like a millionaire or favorite celebrity.
The Belk Town Council held its regular meeting Sept. 9, with Mayor Matt Belk presiding. Council members Deana Belk, Don Byars, Sherry Spack, Terrell Stripling and Joe Waldrop were present, along with Town Clerk Kayla Ellis.
Unofficial results from Tuesday’s municipal runoff election, held Sept. 23, show Micky Joe Morgan leading in Ward 2 with 107 votes (57.84 percent), followed by Rodney Hannah with 78 votes (42.16 percent).
A canvassing of the election results is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 30 at noon at Fayette City Hall.
Fayette Police Chief Danny Jenkins is warning residents about bills labeled as “movie prop money” that may be circulating in the city. A local business received the bill pictured above and reported it to the police department. Residents and business owners are urged to carefully inspect cash before accepting it.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, with the support from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Aviation Unit and the Alabama Drug Enforcement Task Force, conducted a marijuana eradication detail.

The Glen Allen Town Council met in regular session on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the town Community Center. All council members were in attendance for the monthly meeting, with the exception of Councilwoman Bobbie S. McCraw.
Fayette Police are continuing to investigate a break in at Andrew Bynum GMC that occurred Tuesday, July 29, between 9 - 9:30 p.m. at the dealership located at 2535 Temple Ave. Jenkins confirmed that another stolen vehicle, the 2500 GMC Sierra, was recently located in Laurel, Miss.
