Storms, heavy rain cause damage across county

Heavy rain on Monday, June 16, led to flooding in several areas of the city, including portions of Second Ave. N.E., where rising waters caused minor travel delays. Flooding was reported at Guthrie Smith Park covering part of the entrance to the aquatic center. 

On Thursday, June 19, high winds and rain caused scattered storm damage throughout the county. Sheriff Byron Yerby reported several downed trees, including one pictured above at the intersection of Co. Rd. 87 and Smith Road.

Fayette County residents woke up to a cold, snowy day on Friday, Jan. 10. With many roadways deemed impassable for hours, the fierce winter storm brought daily life to a standstill, closing schools and businesses in the county. Despite the cold, many residents braved the weather and enjoyed their snow day with a variety of fun activities.

Tornado confirmed in Fayette County

On Wednesday, June 5, severe storms moved into Northwest Alabama around 6:30 p.m. that produced winds up to 60 mph, lightning and heavy rain. Approximately 115 Fayette County residents were without power after Wednesday evening’s storms according to Alabama Power. Fayette County EMA Director, Michael Stoker, along with the National Weather Service (NWS) traveled the path of the storm in Fayette County. During the preliminary survey, the NWS was able to confirm an EF-0 tornado started at Coffee Creek Rd. in Fayette County and moved into Marion County.

Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday is Feb. 22-24.

The eighth annual Alabama Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday will be observed Feb. 22-24. The tax holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday Feb. 22 and continue until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24. The towns of Berry and Fayette are participating in the tax holiday, and Fayette County is also participating, which means that no sales tax will be charged on covered items in those areas during the holiday. Glen Allen has chosen not to participate in the sales tax holiday this year.
