Council approves change in wastewater employees’s pay

The Fayette City Council approved changing the way that two wastewater operators’ pay is calculated during its Jan. 24 meeting. All council members were present at the meeting. Mayor Rod Northam said that the wastewater treatment plant supervisor, Matt Buckner, had asked that wastewater plant operators Matt McCaa and Danny McCaleb’s pay be changed from salary to hourly. In changing the way the pay is calculated, each of the operators would receive approximately nine hours overtime every two weeks.

 

Two sentenced for double homicide

District Attorney Andy Hamlin has announced prison sentences for two of five defendants involved in a 2018 double murder case in Fayette Co. Lazaro Moran, 35, of New Jersey, will serve two life sentences and Lindettia Lowery, 36, of Fairfield, will serve two concurrent 25-year sentences. Both pled guilty on Friday, Oct. 14 to murder in the shooting deaths of Hernan Antonio Padilla and Allen Clifford Sandlin.

Local baseball teams have mixed results for week

The Hubbertville Lions defeated Meek High School by the score of 11-8 in a game played on April 11. Jagger Youngblood pitched six innings to record the victory, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Brodie Porter pitched the final inning in relief for Hubbertville.

 

Council approves Aquatic Park increases



The Fayette City Council approved an increase in admission at the Fayette Aquatic Park of $2 per person for full admission and $1 per person for all others during its March 22 meeting.
All council members were present for the meeting. Prior to the start of the meeting, Fayette Middle School student Sean White led the council in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

BankFirst purchases The Citizens Bank

After more than 100 years of being a family-owned and operated bank in Fayette, The Citizens Bank will soon become part of the BankFirst system of banks. The announcement was made public in a press release on Thursday, Oct. 14. Members of the BankFirst Corporation traveled to Fayette on that date to make the announcement public.

 

Tigers celebrate 25th anniversary of championship



This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first and only state football championship for the Fayette County High School Tigers. The Tigers had gotten close to making the championship game before 1996. When Coach Waldon Tucker’s oldest son Lance was a freshman quarterback at Fayette in 1989, the team made it to the semifinals before losing a game. In 1990 and 1991, the Tigers again lost in the semifinals. In Lance Tuckers’ senior year, the Tigers made it to the quarterfinals, and again in 1993. In 1994, the Tigers suffered a rare losing season with a 4-7 record.

‘Blind Side’ actor visits FCHS

Quinton Aaron, the actor who played Michael “Big Mike” Oher in the movie “The Blind Side,” visited Fayette County High School on Wednesday, March 17 to present a program to the students on bullying. Students from Berry Elementary, Berry High School and Hubbertville School also attended the program.
