Hubbertville quarterback Blaize Wakefield hands the ball off to Hutch Miles during the Lions’ 50-0 homecoming victory over Brilliant on Sept. 4. Miles helped get the Lions off to a fast start, scoring on a 42-yard run on Hubbertville’s opening possession.
Celebrating homecoming, the Lions welcomed the Brilliant Tigers to Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium. The Tigers won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kick, sending Tyson Lee and Michael Yielding back to receive. Hutch Miles’ kick was recovered at the Lions’ 48-yard line by Mac Brasher, setting Blaize Wakefield and his offensive front up with great field position. Four plays later, with a first down at the Tigers’ 42-yard line, Miles took the handoff over left tackle, rambling to the end zone and putting the Lions on the scoreboard. The two-point conversion pass to Kane Rushing was no good. The ensuing kick by Miles rolled out of bounds, setting the Tigers up at their 40-yard line. Defensive stops on Yielding by Lane Barnes, Miles, Cruz Kizzire and Carter Brand left the Tigers facing third-and-4. Brody Smith carried on third down, but Kizzire and a host of others were on the stop. After an illegal procedure penalty moved Brilliant backward, Barnes was quick into the backfield on fourth down to turn the ball over on downs. On Hubbertville’s next possession, Brilliant was penalized for pass interference, moving the Lions to the 19-yard line. Wakefield then connected with Rushing, who raced to the end zone for the score. The two-point conversion pass to Kizzire was good, putting the Lions up 14-0 with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter.
