Berry softball has mixed results



The Berry Lady Wildcats defeated Sipsey Valley and Winfield on Friday night, March 11, in the Lady Aggies Classic. Berry opened the tournament with a 12-0 defeat of Sipsey Valley.  
Kyla Edmonson pitched four innings, giving up one hit and striking out nine for the win. At the plate, Edmonson was also three-for-four, with a double, and a RBI.  

 

Berry softball defeats Fayette 14-4



Berry’s softball team defeated the Fayette County High School Lady Tigers by a score of 14-4 in its only game played during the week. The Lady Wildcats scored five runs in the second inning, three in the third inning, and six runs in the fifth to close the game out in five innings. Kyla Edmonson pitched a complete game for Berry, earning her third victory of the season. She allowed four hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 opposing batters to secure the win.

Berry began its 2021 softball season with a 6-2 loss to Sulligent on Feb. 25. The losing pitcher for Berry was Kyla Edmonson, who allowed two earned runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Allie Taylor was two-for-three with a run scored, Gracyn Hydrick was two-for-three with a RBI, and Caitlyn Banks was two-for-three with a double. The Lady Wildcats lost its second game of the season 4-1 to South Lamar.

 

Lady Wildcats lose in sub-regionals

The Berry Lady Wildcats lost a heartbreaker at home to Meek in a sub-regional basketball game by the score of 59-56. The game was close throughout, as the teams traded leads many times before Meek closed out the game with a road win to advance to regional play against R.A. Hubbard. Berry was led in scoring by Brooke Hill, who scored 23 points and had five steals during the game.

 

Lady Wildcats win Area 9 Championship

The Berry girls’ basketball team was on top of its game last week, as they won the area tournament. They defeated Holy Spirit by a score of 74-37 on Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Area 9 semifinals. Brooke Hill led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 27 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Zoe Mauldin followed with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, while Allie Taylor added 13 points to the scoreboard. Katelyn Willcutt scored nine points with 10 rebounds, while Anna Kate VanDee had six points, Maggie Hammack had three points and Lynsie Abernathy had two points.

 

Berry Council approves new street lights for town



The Berry Town Council approved the installation of new, brighter LED lights for the streets during its Feb. 1 meeting. All council members were present for the meeting. The council received two proposals from Alabama Power concerning the installation of new lights. The first proposal stated the cost for the replacement of the lights with 53 watt bulbs at all locations. The cost for that proposal was $218.92 per month, or $2,627.04 per year. The second proposal was to use 53 watt bulbs only for Highway 18 through the city limits of Berry, with 35 watt bulbs used at all other locations.

Berry continues to win as tournament approaches



The Berry girls’ basketball team continues to win games as they head toward the area tournament next week. On Feb. 1, Berry defeated Meek 58-46. Brooke Hill led the Lady Wildcats with 28 points and seven rebounds. Allie Taylor scored 12 points with nine rebounds, while Katelyn Willcutt added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Zoe Mauldin scored eight points with nine rebounds.

Berry boys win two games, lose two during week

The Berry boys’ basketball team lost its first two games of the week before finishing the week with two wins. South Lamar defeated Berry 63-52. Colton Abernathy led Berry with 16 points, followed by Deon Mayfield and Colton Cunningham with eight points each. Johnathan Locke scored seven points, followed by Isaiah Kizzire with six points and Josh Ward with two points. Noah Darty had two points and Chrishuan Hennings scored a free throw to round out the scoring for Berry.

The Lady Wildcats defeated South Lamar 55-37 in an area game played last week. Leading the scoring for Berry was Brooke Hill with 22 points. She also had six assists, six rebounds and six steals in the game. Zoe Mauldin had 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Allie Taylor added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Anna Kate VanDee scored five points for the Lady Lions, with Katelyn Willcutt adding a free throw and 10 crucial rebounds.

The Berry girls’ basketballl team continued its strong season last week with dominating wins over Pickens County and Hubbertville. On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Lady Wildcats overwhelmed Pickens County to record a 47-9 victory. Brooke Hill led Berry with 17 points, four assists and six steals. Allie Taylor had 11 points, followed by Maggie Hammack with eight points and eight rebounds. Zoe Mauldin scored six points with nine rebounds, while Anna Kate VanDee added three points. Rounding out the scoring for Berry was Katelyn Willcutt with two points.
