PATRICIA BREITLING

A private graveside service for Mrs. Pat Breitling, age 86 of Fayette, was held Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, at Fayette Memorial  Gardens. She died Sunday, Jan. 28, in Pensacola, Fla.
Patricia Breitling was born in Fayette County on Sept. 19, 1937, as the fourth of five children to Donald and Eulene Newton. Subsequent to her graduation at Fayette County High School in May of 1955, she enrolled that fall in a nursing program in Tuscaloosa. In the fall of 1956, she met and fell in love with third-year University of Alabama medical student Harold Eugene Breitling Jr. On Dec. 1, 1957, they married in Birmingham, where Dr. Breitling had begun a one year internship affiliated with Caraway Methodist Hospital. After completing a second year with Caraway Methodist as a resident physician, the young couple with their daughter Melissa in tow moved to Patricia’s hometown of Fayette where Dr. Breitling began a family medical practice that spanned over 50 years.
Dr. B, as he was fondly called, always reminded folks that Patricia took care of the home so he could focus on the care and well being of his patients. Her love and support sustained him as well as their children. She was an exceptional cook and baker in which both family and friends were grateful beneficiaries of her culinary skills.
In the role as a hostess, she oversaw many bridal teas for young brides-to-be in the Fayette area. She was active for many years in the First Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher and Girls-In-Action leader. She was also involved in Girl Scouts as a troop leader. As a dedicated mother she supported her children in their various extracurricular activities. She loved playing bridge, gardening as well as doting on her grandchildren and the children and grandchildren of others.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Eugene Breitling Jr.; parents, Donald and Eulene Newton; sister, Joann Stough; and brothers, Gary Newton and Ned Newton.
She is survived by her sister Donna Killion; daughter, Dr. Melissa Breitling (Wayne Griffith); and son, Harold Eugene Breitling III (Casandra);  three grandchildren, James Griffith, Amelia Breitling Glass (Andrew) and Alexander Breitling; and three great grandchildren, Leah, Gabriel and Kara Glass.
Honorary pallbearers were Alexander Breitling, James Griffith, Lt. Col. Andrew Killion USMC, Jeff Taylor, Jim Sims, and Gregg Moore.
Nelson Funeral Home of Fayette directed.
