After a year of planning, Winston County, the original “free state,” can now say it has its own Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War camp. It’s called the George E. Spencer, Camp No. 67. The camp was organized Nov. 7, 2020, with officers elected Dec. 29. Currently, there are four camps within the State of Alabama, which has its own department within the organization.
The last meeting of Camp No. 67 was Saturday, May 8, where the 27th member, Joe Sanderson, was inducted. Members are planning a driving tour on Saturday, May 29, where approximately 20 Union soldiers will be honored at three cemeteries.
