DR. HENRY ALLEN SPIES, JR.
Graveside service for Dr. Henry Allen Spies, Jr., age 93, of Leonard, Texas, was held Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at 2 p.m., at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham with Willie Johnson officiating. Family visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 14, from 6-8 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel in Leonard.
Dr. Spies was born July 19, 1925, in Bonham to Henry Allen Spies, Sr. and Dillie Broyles Spies. He graduated from Ladonia High School in 1942 as valedictorian of his class. He attended East Texas University in Commerce, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree.
He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 as a Median Tech 409 on the US Army Hospital Ship, Ernestine Karanda, for six tours of sea duty. Upon his discharge from the Army, he worked in Birmingham for his uncle, Dr. Tom Spies, while he studied at the Alabama School of Medicine, receiving his Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and his Dental Degree at the School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn. He was accepted as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Health at London, England.
Dr. Spies joined the dental staff of the Marlin, Texas VA Hospital in 1961. After three years he transferred to the VA Hospital in Dallas where he served 34 years as Assistant Chief in the Dental Service and 23 years part-time as a professor at Baylor Dental School. He was a member of the American Academy of General Dentistry, American Association. He was a Master Mason for over 65 years. He passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018.
He is survived by cousins, family and many friends of Fayette.
He was preceded in death by his parents; uncle, Dr. Tom Spies; sister, Betty Sanders; and brother-in-law, Robert P. Sanders.
