Editor’s Note: Jeffrey Anderson is currently serving as a Fulbright Scholar in Košice, Slovakia, where he teaches courses on American history and culture at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. He arrived in the country in January, and will leave in July. He is joined there by his wife, Lynn, and sons, Michael and David. Slovakia joins the Ukrainian border, and Košice is located only 60 miles from the Ukrainian border.
My family and I were gathered around the dining room table, and Jaroslav, the patriarch of the family who had invited us to Sunday lunch, was weeping. We had met for the first time just over an hour before, following an invitation to an after-church meal by his son, also named Jaroslav.
